Protect Yourself from Layoffs
1. Do your job well
“Be there”. That is, get involved and take on higher profile tasks. Become indispensable.
2. Become a profit centre, not a simply a cost centre
Even if you are in a non-revenue generating position that does not mean that you cannot get involved with generating client leads or revenue. Be creative and start reaching out to potential clients
3. Be positive
Talk to your colleagues about what is good about the work rather than the negative things. There are always going to be problems at the workplace, but you need to be part of the solution rather than the problem.
4. Education
Continue to upgrade your skills so that they are relevant to your employer. Getting an education 10 years ago and not continually learning does not cut it anymore. Sign up for some night courses or distance education course if you do not have the time to go to class. Even if it is a non-work related course, by working in a structured educational setting you are working parts of your mind which you would not otherwise. It will open your mind to new ideas and possibilities at work.
5. Extend yourself
People tend to focus too much on their job description and limit themselves from extending their reach. Talk to other departments and see if they need a hand when you have some free time. You will not only learn how to job someone else’s job, you will also extend your professional network.
6. Give and take
Give a little and you might find that your employer will see you as a team player. Taking a voluntary pay cut is tough, but if your company is facing financial collapse this is beter than the alternative.
