The Telephone Interview

March 4th, 2009 | Location: [ Interviewing ]

Due to time constraints and increases in workloads, HR Specialists are often conducting telephone interviews to determine whether an in-person interview is necessary. Pre-screening candidates allows HR Specialists to evaluate candidates quickly and gauge how interested the candidates are in working for the company. As with in-person interviews, take the time to prepare and treat the telephone interview like an in-person interview.

Things to do before a telephone interview:

• Prepare for the interview.
• Tell others in your household that you cannot be disturbed.
• Avoid using a mobile phone unless you have a strong signal. If the signal quality is an issue, let the interviewer know.
• Conduct the interview in a comfortable setting with little or no distractions.
• Have your resume, cover letter, and some information on the company in front of you.
• Have your references ready (if you have not already included it in your resume).

Things to do during a telephone interview:

• Write down the Interviewers’ name, in case you forget.
• When talking to the interviewer use the same business etiquette as you would for an in-person interview.
• Pay attention to your tone and smile when you talk. It will make a difference.
• Take your time when answering, ask the interviewer to repeat the question if you need more time.
• Use complete sentences with evidence that you have understood the question. Avoid one word answers.
• Thank the interviewer and ask about the next step if they have not told you already. You can say, “Thank you for your time. I have really enjoyed talking to you and learning more about your company. Should I expect to hear from you by a certain date?”

Preparing for a telephone interview can give you an advantage in the hiring process because by making a good impression over the telephone you can increase your chance of getting an in-person interview and landing that dream job.
