Landing that Perfect Job
It’s hard work to find good work, so don’t take the lazy routine when pursuing your dream job. Here are some tips to help you land that perfect job:
- Check your résumé for correct grammar and spelling:
Your résumé is your calling card. If it isn’t 100% error-free, you are not going to get that job.
- Emphasize results:
Detail the results in your résumé, not just your daily tasks. If you saved the company money, brought in new clients or managed a team that didn’t have any turnover, describe all that. Be proud of your results.
- Write a cover letter:
Make a case as to why you should be hired. The first paragraph should be an introduction letting them know which position you are applying for. The middle paragraphs should highlight the critical three elements of the job description and why you can do them exceptionally well. Use the language of the job ad itself. The last paragraph should thank the interviewer for his or her time and say when you’ll follow up.
- Practice interviewing:
Do research on the company you are interviewing for and practice the typical questions they will ask you, such as “What are you strengths and weaknesses”. Weaknesses can be positive if you are working towards becoming better at it. For example, if speaking in front of large crowds is one of your weakness, you can say that you are taking courses to help you become better at it.
- Project confidence:
Look your interviewer in the eye, give them a firm handshake, and answer each question with assurance.
- Be positive:
Never say anything negative during an interview. Especially never say anything negative about co-workers, managers and companies you’ve been employed with. Stay positive!
- Don’t undersell yourself:
Boldly state your accomplishments and lay out all the reasons you’re a good fit for the job.
